Dr. Moses and Mei Mei Yu founders of the Yu Family Clinic.
Moses Yu Sr. learned acupuncture in China from his father, Fu-Kang, a 19th generation acupuncturist. “When I came home from school, my father had me do my acupuncture even before my homework,” Yu has said. More rigorous study followed and eventually, certification. Coming to the United States in the mid 1960s in hopes to perform acupuncture in Los Angeles. Yu was unable to get licensed since acupuncture was largely unheard of at the time. Undeterred, Yu quickly brought healing to the people in his community by setting up a makeshift office in Chinatown where people would patiently wait on the stairs, knowing that Dr. Yu would soon be providing relief for their various ailments.
Moses Sr. was instrumental in drafting a bill to make licensing possible in California. After much resistance from the American Medical Association and then-Governor Ronald Reagan, the bill was finally passed in 1976 by Reagan’s successor – and a firm believer in acupuncture – Jerry Brown. Dr. Yu became a licensed acupuncturist in 1976 the same year Yu Family Clinic was established.
Dr. Mei Mei Yu began learning and crafting her skill at the Yu Clinic in Taiwan under the tutelage of Fu-Kang Yu Moses Sr.’s father from 1965 until she moved to Los Angeles with her husband in 1972. .Mei Mei also treated patients at the orignal makeshift office in Chinatown and was one of the few acupuncturis’s to offer fertility acupuncture in Los Angeles at that time. She received her license in early 1977 And began practicing at the current Yu Family clinic location In Los Angeles . Mei Mei’s caring nature and passion for her craft and her love of helping people made her the driving force for which the foundation of the Yu Family Clinic was built.
Since opening the Los Angeles clinic Moses Sr and Mei Mei have treated countless happy patients they welcomed their children, Moses Jr., and Wanni into the family practice in 2000. Moses Sr. retired in 2015 and recently passed away in 2020. Mei Mei retired in 2020 after over 40 dedicated years at the clinic. Wanni and Moses Jr are honored to continue the teachings and the love for helping people that the clinic was founded upon. It is with that spirit that the clinic continues.
"Mei Mei’s caring nature and passion for her craft and her love of helping people made her the driving force for which the foundation of the Yu Family Clinic was built."
